The studios electrical system is almost done. We have made some pretty good strides in the past week or so and are going to go all out finishing up the low voltage video lines and security cameras as well as the mic tie lines from the main studio. We will have 5 different HD video lines feeding a patch bay in the control room using multiple formats.  This will allow us to accommodate pretty much any video format and processing the video shoots.

Stay tuned!

Mastering EQ from Orban Equalizers

This is an older Orban EQ but still a fantastic mastering tool! Very warm sort of a Neveish tone with lots of detail. This Orban EQ has the ability to switch each band on each channel in or out of the signal path as well as a variable high and low pass filter. Using an Orban EQ is no big trick to master as it sits seamlessly inside of the sound source, instead of appearing to sit on top of it like some EQs do. orban equalizer

Picked up a couple more nice mics! Got a pair of Neuman U87ai mics for the studio! Not quite as cool as the original 87 but still bad ass!

We started adding some more dryywall into the lounge and front bathroom yesterday! Good to see some progress that doesn’t involve wires!

Our electrical system is almost complete! We have been working on it as much as we can and today we wired more of the lounge area, and the security system. Really looking forward to getting this thing built so we can install the cool gear and get busy making some music!

Building a Recording Studio is Fun!

Building a recording studio is fun…..or at least the idea of building a recording studio is fun. I have put so much time into the electrical the past two weeks that everything else seems to be falling a bit behind. However if we are doing everything right then there will be no noise issues from electricity at all. This will all be worth it in the end. The lighting along has taken so much time to sort out. We will have about 3 different main options for lighting in each room as well as a complete DMX controlled system that will give infinite lighting options once it is done….if I can ever get it all done!

Finally picked up a nice set of AKG 451 mics as a matched set. These are small diaphragm condensers that have a fantastic lineal sound and work amazing on acoustic guitars, high hats, and drum over heads!

Peluso Micophone Reviews

We have been looking all over the place for someone to do some killer reviews on the Peluso microphones. These mics offer several different kinds of capsules, tubes and polar patterns and even have a Neumann U47 clone that has been getting very good reviews but for some reason nobody is willing to post clips of these things. Well we are looking and ready to buy a few more mics so as soon as we do we will be updating this post with all the information we can muster!

DAW Platform Reviews

We are currently working on our DAW platform reviews. We have been through all of them I think in the past several months. Some are killer and some not so much. The standard for the industry is obviously Pro Tools but does that mean it is the best one? All DAW platforms need to handle some basic functions and they are recording, mixing, and monitoring, along with some basic editing. So many platforms get over loaded trying to be all things to all people. When that happens the screens can get really crowded. This is where things such as software navigation come heavily into play.

Pro Tools was the first computer based audio platform designed for recording studios. I remember seeing the first versions of this appearing around 1989 or so. Because it is the oldest platform it also has the best name recognition from many different angles. However, just like Windows Internet Explorer, when something tries to be all things to all people you can get seriously bogged down with tons of bloat code as well as crowded screen space and confusing navigation. There are other DAW platforms out there that do some specific things very well and many even better than Pro Tools. Just because it is the best known platform, doesn’t make it the best. The whole “Everyone Is Using It” doesn’t make it the right platform or the best one either.

Platforms such as Nuendo have easier access to direct editing tools that you would think Protools would have adopted a long time ago.

DAW platforms such as Record (discontinued) was very basic but gave you a ton of what you need and not much of what you did not. While the graphics may be very basic everything was very easy to find.

My favorite DAW platform lately is Presonus Studio One. I have to say that I was very skeptical when a friend suggested it. I was like “No way! How can a mid level audio equipment manufacturing company make a software better than Protools?”. He insisted that I try it out before I made any assumptions…I was very glad I did! That DAW software just kicks butt! So easy to navigate and you can drop and drag files to anywhere from anywhere! You can also add effects to any track by simply dragging the effect onto the track from a list! Teddy Riley who re mixed all of the Michael Jackson post humus mixes did two mixes…One with Protools and the other with Presonus Studio One. Well Sony sent back the mixes from the Protools session and said that the Presonus mixes just sounded so much better. I have to agree after going over all of them.
